The Short and Curlies Film Review

Standard

This is the short, comedic story of a romance between a young girl, Joy (Alison Steadman) and a young man named Clive (David Thewlis). Joy has no emotion or humour whereas Clive only shares his emotions through jokes and humour. However, they still complement each other, despite being the complete opposites.

I appreciated the funny irony of this film, I loved the way the two young lovers where such opposite people, but still loved each other the same way, but showing it with different approaches. Joy, was a very comedic name for the character, because she never showed emotion towards Clive.

Be Kind Rewind Film Review

Standard

Be kind rewind is a comedy film about swede movies, where two friends, Jerry (Jack Black) and Mike (Mos Def) try to re-create the films that Jerry accidently erased when he was in Mikes video store magnetised, And when they sell the videos to the customers, they hope no one will notice.

I enjoyed this film allot, the acting was fair, in my opinion and the story line was very creative and original. Using different ways to re-create films in a film itself, was genius. I thought it was very funny and Jack Blacks character was more relatable than he should be.

Much A Do About Nothing Film Review

Standard

Now this film was in fact both, intriguing to my filmic knowledge as well as a funny and romantic story of love, reaching to my inner woman. The contrast of a black and white film with a romantic comedy is pure genius, Whedon has truly outdone himself. The black and white picture gives off more of a dark, depressing viewing to the audience whereas the film itself is very up-beat, funny and romantic, so it seems as if Whedon took Shakespeare’s previous plays, and how most of them are about murder and darkness between families, and kept his prior thoughts and threw in some modern flair. Truly a wonderful film.

However. The Shakespearian language, perhaps seemed like an original and cleaver idea, which I admit it was, yet, in my personal opinion it was hard to keep track of what the characters where saying, due to the fact that people of my age aren’t really used to Shakespearian language and wouldn’t have been able to understand if they were talking slow, and yet, The characters were talking fast paced and it was extremely hard to keep up with them, which in turn made it hard to understand the plot.

Dornröschen and Scheewittchen Film review (two German Films)

Standard

This Disney animation classic, turned German live action, was not one of my favorites; the acting was, mediocre and un-realistic. However the plot itself was very intriguing in my opinion, Thomas Freundner, did stick to the original story well, and made minor changes, which I enjoyed thoroughly indeed, and appreciated.

Jack and Jill Film Review (bad film)

Standard

Jack and Jill is a family comedy, about twins, Jack (Adam Sander) and Jill (Adam Sandler) that don’t see each other as often as Jill may wish. Jill is the complete opposite of Jack, and they collide. Seeing as Jill is currently going through her third divorce and not having much money. Whereas Jack is in a committed relationship with his wife, and two children. Although when Jack finds out that he needs Jill to get an actor in his ‘commercial’ she drives him insane, as well as ‘ruins his life’ Jack would say, a million times within the film.

Jack and Jill is awful. Completely unwatchable, and I had the same thought throughout the whole film: Why can I not combust right now, and not have to watch this, god-awful film. Adam Sandler playing two characters was a gargantuan mistake. Personally, I feel that Adam Sandler was the wrong choice for this film, and perhaps with different casting ‘Jack and Jill’ may not have been completely awful. Although still terrible I must say. Seeing Adam in a fat suit and woman’s clothing and makeup, was not only extremely demeaning for the actor himself, bus a complete nightmare to watch, I don’t think I will ever be able to get the image of Adam Sandler and his razor sharp voice out of my brain. Really. It’s an increasingly mind-numbing problem. However. Jack and Jill, may be an awful film, it intrigues me to carry on watching, hoping for something better.

50/50 Film Review (library film)

Standard

50/50 by Jonathan Levine, (2011) is a film that I enjoyed thoroughly, that could bring me to tears as well as make me laugh out loud. This, within a film can be hard to create. The main characters;Adam Lerner (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) and his co-worker Kyle (Seth Rogan) act astoundingly, in this ‘how to beat cancer’ emotional roller-coaster.

A Clockwork Orange Film Review (pre 2000)

Standard

The film I had the privilege to review was, Stanley Kubrick’s ‘Clockwork Orange’ (1972) this film, already won many awards during its time, may be the complete definition of ‘the weird and wonderful’ merged into two. Although perhaps for some, this film may not be the easiest to follow on first watch. Although in my opinion watching this film more than once is highly advised. This timeless piece of work focuses on a young boy of 15, Alex and his followers, which he calls his ‘drooges’, in my person opinion, this film is and will always be a timeless classic, and one of my favourite films I have seen In my lifetime. This may change in the future. However, right now ‘A clockwork Orange’ is a very enjoyable and fascinating film.

Cabin in the woods film review:

Standard

The cabin in the woods is a horror-comedy, following the horrific experience of five young people on a ‘planned’ trip to a cabin in the woods. Shortly after arriving, things take a turn for the worst when someone finds and reads aloud the diary of a young, red-neck-hillbilly girl, which as predicted is when horrific monsters start to appear. But things aren’t as they seem.

This film was very enjoyable in my opinion, and I would recommend it to my friends. I thought it was very refreshing and hilariously funny to watch a badly thought out film, that was actually planned to look badly thought out. I found the storyline interesting and the characters relatable.

Western

Standard

There are many main conventions within a western film that make up what it is. For example, cowboys and Indians are almost always connected with western films, for example, ‘the good the bad and the ugly’ and ‘lone ranger’ both having such elements as, horses, spurs, desolate locations and cacti. Other conventions like the style of a western film is important, like old western movies are famous for their unique style, like the almost red lighting, and definition of a character, shown by extreme close ups, which are almost always used in final duels, these such elements have now made a more comedic approach in other genre films.                                                                                                                                                                 western
